Doug, I've also gotten discouraged with blogging a couple of times. Like you, I've realized I need to be more selective about whose blogs I read, and also more careful about letting myself get into negative discussions. I must say, though, that yours is a very worthwhile blog and I always learn a lot from what you say - and enjoy learning it, too. My thoughts and prayers are with you as you struggle with depression. God bless you.

Am sorry to hear about your struggle with depression, Doug. On the subject of blogging: It is always good to read other people's view-points, and everyone is entitled to an opinion - although I do agree some people who write on the internet are not particularly tactful, and there is never a need to be nasty to anyone.
For what it's worth, I find what you write quite fascinating. Although, in terms of your illness, I would hope you are getting it dealt with via proper channels. A public forum where people are free to write exactly how they feel may not be the place to go in your darkest moments :-)

Dear Doug, I strongly empathise with the depression - I did the counter thing when I got depressed and cut off from just about everyone I know. As a result, it took me the best part of two years to even begin putting my life back together, and I'm still working on it! From what you have written above, take heart that you are a good deal wiser than me in recognising the importance of keeping the channels of communication open.

A quick anecdote a propos difficult people... I have just moved into a new flat; it's mostly a good neighbourhood, but a couple of weeks ago, the chap on the ground floor had to put up with two bits of vandalism to his car and property. A few days later I had the rear wind screen wiper of my car ripped off. Apparently, this is what students get up to these days.. Anyhow, we commiserated over a cup of tea - I was fuming, he just laughed and said, These things aren't personal. Quite right too!

The internet is definitely strange territory - it was one of the reasons I lost my way in the first place, with a complete breakdown & subsequent depression that I'm still struggling with, but having said that, I begin to see how you bloggers are brave people. I admire you, and if you are wanting to write, then keep writing. Instant public domain is the only way to be heard, and one of the more positive aspects of the internet age.

Finally, just to say I resisted medication for ages and ages, meanwhile I got iller and iller. I'm glad to say I'm a convert now, 50mg of Sertraline every morning - it got me where I needed to be, and I don't see any shame in it.

All the best to you and your blog, don't let anyone get you down, especially not potty Christians or Atheists. Only think.... they are just about as bad as each other, therefore they surely cancel each other out! Caroline

One converse of “saying things to each other we’d never dream of saying if we were in the same room” is that blogging places some of us in the "same room" when in geographical fact we live poles/hemispheres apart. Blogging means people who would never dream of being in the same room get to talk to each other. I certainly appreciate having "met" you!
